Cueto Suspended for Fighting

The Dominican pitcher Johnny Cueto was suspended seven games for his involvement in a brawl between his Cincinnati Reds and St. Louis Cardinals.

The manager of both teams were also suspended for two games.

Major League Baseball announced Thursday that Cueto, the Reds manager Dusty Baker and Cardinals manager Tony La Rusa, received financial penalties. The amount was not disclosed.

Four other players were fined but not suspended: catcher Yadier Molina and pitcher Chris Carptener, both of the Cardinals, and second baseman Brandon Phillips and reliever Russ Springer of the Reds.

The fight occurred in the first inning of Tuesday's game in Cincinnati.

The Cardaneles won the match and swept the series three games to snatch the Reds the lead in the Central Division of the National League.

Reds spokesman Rob Butcher, issued a statement noting that "we regret the incident.
