Japanese inPrison for Betting

Former coach Taiwanese baseball team was sentenced to 20 months in prison in the first verdict in the case of match fixing that shocked fans favorite sport of the island, said a spokesman of the court acting.

Japanese Shin Nakagomi, former coach of the Brother Elephants, was sentenced for aiding in the arrangements of five games in 2008 and 2009 that allowed him to pocket 1.5 million Taiwan dollars ($ 46,800), the spokesman said.

Shin could pay a deposit of NT $ 1.8 million in exchange for a four-year suspended sentence, according to the source of the Taipei District Court, who did not know if the Japanese coach would choose that option. Shin was arrested last year in the Taiwanese capital.
