Jeter Passes Babe

Derek Jeter bumped Babe Ruth in the record books last night.

Jeter's second-inning single was the 2,874th hit of his career, moving him past Ruth into 39th place all-time. Jeter already had passed Ruth on his way to becoming the franchise hit leader for the Yankees, but only 2,518 of Ruth's came for the Yankees. The other hits came with the Red Sox (342) and the Boston Braves (13).

After the hit, the scoreboard in center field showed Jeter and Ruth next to each other. The crowd gave him a standing ovation, and he tipped his helmet.

"It means a lot to the organization," Jeter said. "Any time you have a chance to pass somebody great, it is something special. It feels good after you accomplish it."

Jeter added another hit in the fifth inning with a two-run double, and now trails Mel Ott by one hit for 38th place. Jeter has the most hits among active players. (NY POST)
