Al Horford to NBA All Star Game

Al Horford

Blake Griffin goes to his first NBA All-Star Game, and Kevin Garnett tied an NBA record with his 14th selection as part of one of four players from the Boston Celtics going to the midseason event.

Manu Ginobili (San Antonio Spurs), Al Horford (Atlanta Hawks) and Pau Gasol, Los Angeles Lakers are the three selected hispanic players to be held at the Staples Center in Los Angeles on 20 February.

Rajon Rondo, Paul Pierce and Ray Allen will join Garnett, tying Jerry West, Shaquille O'Neal and Karl Malone as the players with the most consecutive selections.

The Celtics joined the Detroit Pistons in 2006 as the only teams who have had four players chosen as reserves by the coaches.

Griffin, the player the Clippers favorite to be Rookie of the Year, will become the first rookie All-Star since Yao Ming in 2003.

Joining Griffin on the team in the Western Conference Tim Duncan and Ginobili, the San Antonio Spurs leading, forwards Dirk Nowitzki of Dallas, and Gasol, the Lakers, and the bases Deron Williams, Utah, and Russell Westbrook
, Oklahoma City, who join Griffin as the lone player selected for the first time.

Chris Bosh accompany his fellow Los Angeles Miami LeBron James and Dwyane Wade, who were selected as starters.

The other reserves in the east are Joe Johnson and Horford, Atlanta. The reserves were selected in voting by head coaches in each conference, voting for two forwards, two guards, one center and two additional players, regardless of position. The votes were cast for the winning teams in the East, whose reserves are represented by only three teams.

The vote was more difficult in the West, where the coaches did not select players like Kevin Love, LaMarcus Aldridge, Zach Randolph and Lamar Odom as eaves.

Tony Parker missed the opportunity even though it is the second best scorer for the Spurs, who entered Thursday's game with 40-8 mark. The veteran Steve Nash of the Suns, and Monta Ellis, the Warriors, the sixth-leading scorer in the league, were not elected.

"I think every year is difficult for the bases they do, because so many bases in this loga good, especially in the West," Williams said.

"There will always be young boys who are coming into the league and will continue to fight each year. That's another reason why I feel so honored."
The holders were chosen by fan voting and announced last week.

Dwight Howard (Orlando), Derrick Rose (Chicago) and forward Amare Stoudemire (Knicks) are the other owners of the East, while Kobe Bryant (Lakers), guard Chris Paul (Hornets), forwards Carmelo Anthony (Denver) and Kevin Durant (Oklahoma City) and Houston center Yao Ming were chosen in the West. Yao is injured and Commissioner David Stern will choose a replacement.

That gives another chance to Love, who is averaging 21.4 points and 15.5 rebounds (best in the league) per game and hit 43.9 percent from three-point attempts. Had 34 double-doubles in a row, but will definitely hit the mark of the Minnesota Timberwolves 11-37. But the coaches could not overlook Griffin, though the Clippers have mark under .500.

The first pick in NBA Draft 2009 has been spectacular after missing last season following a knee operation, averaging 23 points and 12.7 rebounds while midseason moves very impressive with their display of dunks.

The East will be coached by Doc Rivers, the Celtics, who said earlier Thursday that he expected his players were awarded four and said he would play at the same time. "That way we can run offensive All-Star," Rivers said.

"It would be the first time." Duncan got his 13th run selection, even though it had the lowest numbers of his career as the Spurs will have their minutes. His coach, Gregg Poppovich, train West. Information from The Associated Press was used in this report.
