Pujols and Cards Extend Terms

The
St. Louis Cardinals and Albert Pujols'representatives agreed to extend the deadline 24 hours to reach a new agreement as a gesture of respect for Stan Musial.

Musial, a living legend of the Cardinals on Tuesday will receive the Presidential Medal of Freedom in Washington. The manager John Mozeliak said Monday that the team did not want to distract the attention on a special day for Musial.

Dan Lozano, the agent first baseman, had set a Tuesday deadline for reaching an agreement on extending the contract. That day is the first that must be submitted pitchers and catchers to spring training in Jupiter, Florida.

The new term, according to Mozeliak, is noon Wednesday.

Pujols earned a salary of $ 16 million this season, the last year of his contract, with 4 million deferred without interest.

31 year old striker wants a new contract, perhaps with an extension covering a decade, which would make him one of the highest paid players in the majors and also allows him to retire with the uniform.
